MAD CHINAMAN KILLED
SHOT BY A RETURNED SOLDIER-

A wemehdons crowd witnessed the last ! stages of the siege of the mad Chinaman who ran amok in the Chinese' Christian Church, and there hid in an occupied house, a small weather-board cottage in East-street, in the centre of the Chinese quarter." The police kept up a heavy fusillade with rilles and revolvers, while, the madmaii frequently replied. The fire brigade also got several hoses to work, but in attempting to secure a better position two of the firemen were shot, but not severely injured. The siege continued till 10 o'clock, when, after pouring in great quantities of water, the police made a sudden rush and burst open the door. The Chinaman was shot through the head. The two firemen who were shot make the total number of victims seventeen, most of them being slightly wounded. Preparations had.been made to bomb the maniac out, but the final rush, made this unnecssary. Press representatives, running the gauntlet of several bullets, participated in the final rush^ It was a returned soldier namedl Ryan whoshot the Chinaman. He borrowed a police revolver, and waving aside admonitions to bo cautious, rushed the Chinaman, who fired two shots, but missed Ryan, who with, a single shot killed the desperado. The latter had I kept the police at bay for fifteen hours.
