(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZE«7,AXD CAULS ASSOCIATION.) ST. JOHN'S 20 May' (delayed). The aviation camp was thrown into the deepest gloom when it. was realised that Hawker and Grieve 'were probably lost. Raynham, who left his room for the first time since his Martinsyde machine crashed, when endeavouring to follow Hawker, was greatly concerned when the first messages relating to the picking up of Hawker were unconfirmed. The population of St. John's is grieving as in cases of disaster to the fishing and sealing fleets. The rebuilding of Raynham's Martinsyde is proceeding, and the Sopwith mechanics have been placed at Eayiv lam's disposal. NEW YORK, 20th May (delayed). When Hawker was still overdue, the newspapers and public were unlimited in their praise of his exploit. One newspaper says : "Hawker and Grieve have given an example of dash and daring of which, their country, and their families and friends, pay well be proud. Proof that the British race still breeds men is unnecessary." Another paper says : "If Hawker and Grieve are lost they will go down into history as the bravest men who ever attempted a daring feat." Another newspaper says : "The blood will leap to the heart of every brave man when he thinks of the magnificent courage of Hawker, and Grieve. God grant they are safe."
