CHRISTCHURCH HOTELS

COMPLAINTS REGARDING ACCOMODATION.

(HI TELEGRAM.— MESS ASSOCIATION.1) CHRISTCHURCH, 2nd June. At a meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day the chairman stated that he had visited many hotels in Christchurch, and in some the accommodation was so bad that he was considering the question of condemning certain premises. Complaints had been made, to the committee of travellers being refused meals because they asked for them after the schedule time. Tho Chairman pointed out that the licensees were also innkeepers, and were bound to supply meals at anytime of the day or night, and must also provide accommodation for travellers as long as it was available. The penalties for non-compliance with tho law were very heavy. The Health { Officer's report recommended certain alterations to the bars and premises of a number of hotels, some of which, the Chairman stated, were beyond the jurisdiction of tho committee. The committee adjourned for a fortnight, the Chairman stating that all the licensees who are lessees must produce a statement showing any encumbrances on their leases.
