WHAT IS THE EIGHT-HOUR DAY?
Confidently as people generally talk about the '.'eight-hour day" and think they know what they mean, the National Industries Conference Board of the United States has devoted an. entire research report to an explanation of what the term really stands for in its relation to industrial matters. There is, it appears, a. "straight" eight-hour day, which means that eight hours comprise the limit of tinio that a man should work, for the best results both to his employer and to himself, and a "basic" eight-hour day, which means that_ eight hours should bo tho. standard period' for computing his' wage, while anything more must bo regarded as "overtime," ajid paid for according to special arrangement. Considered in all its bearings in the research roport, the complexities of tho eight-hour day arc such that reading this document may well mako a professional man happy to think that ho does not earn his living by managing a, factory.
