AUSTRALIANS ENLIST
FOR SERVICE ON EASTERN FRONT
' LONDON, 50th May. The Australian Press Association learns that 150 Australians, mostly infantry, have enlisted to go to Russia-. All were demobilised during the past fortnight. Australian Headquarters here dis-. courage the enlistment of Australians having dependents in England, aud refuse leave to Australians having dependents in Australia. They are mostly men between twenty and thirty-three, mainly moved by the spirit of tho adventure. Several, after being recruited by British oflicars, refused to attest on learning that they would not be permitted to wear'the Australian uniform nor placed in a definite Australian unit. No members of tho Australian Flying Corps have enlisted. Brigadier Davies, of the Eighth Brigade, will command the British battalion. The men are mostly enlisting by twos and threes, seldom - singly Major Work, V.C., and Captain Moon, ■ V.C., are seeking to enlhit. Their comrades are endeavouring to dissuade them. The men will receive half deferred pay if they enlist for a year. The War Oiiice will pay their return to Australia. . Further enlistments are unlikely.
