Mr. J. B Mawsyii, "M.A., of the staff of Wellington College, has been appointed fifth*"'assistant'of the Southland Boys' High School.'. ''■''-, Mr. William Sloan, aged eighty-one, the earliest Buller pioneer, died .on Saturday, after a brief illness, states a Press Association mesage from Westport. Mr. John Uncles, who was well known at Coromandel "and Thames, and had served in the Australian and New Zealand Police Forces, has died in Auckland. Mr. W. G. Aldridge, senior assistant of the Christchurch Technical College, has been appointed director' of the Southland Technical College, out o£ twenty applicants. Mr. William Castle, a member of the Wellington Harbour Board, has booked a passage to San , Francisco by the Moana. He will be absent in America and Great Britain for about six months. Staff-Sergeant R. R. Leys, who after just on three years' service in the Ad-jutant-General's branch, at Defence I Headquarters, was the recipient of a presentation from his fellow-clerks, on "hu> leaving- the Defence Department. -Captain Frank Newman, M.C. (only son of Dr. A. K. Newman, M.P. for Wellington East), came back to his native city, by the. Pakeha on Friday. Captain Newman distinguished himself in France as an officer 'of the Royal Field Artillery, and was slightly wounded. The Rev. F. Griffiths, of St. Peters parish, Terrace End, Palmerston N^rth, is leaving shortly for Australia, where he will take up his duties in the diocese, of Newcastle, in which town he was originally carrying on his work. 'A pre'senlatlon was made to Mr. Griffiths on. behalf of his coneregation by the Mayor (Mr. 3. A..Nash, M.P.j. j ' Cabled advice has been received by Mr J. Varnham, of Hohiria-'foad, Hataitai, that his sou, Captain F. S. Varnham, M.C, is returning by the s.s. Prinzessin; Captain Vaatham left as a second lieutenant with the 4th Reinforcements, and saw service at Gallipoli until ,the evacuation . after wards'going to the Western front, where he remained until leaving Cologne in March last. . Mr. F. Adrian Morton, who was well known as a. member of the Wellington College cricket and football teams,.'arrived from, the South on Friday morning. Mr. Morion, is at present studying medicine at the Otago University. . He is the youngest -son of Mr. W. H. Morton, the City Engineer. His elder ■ brother, Mr. 'H. Conrad Morton, returned by the Athenic a' few weeks ago. ■Mr. W. Thomas, of the Dominion Laboratory staff, has been granted six months' leave, of absence, and is a passenger for London by the lonic, which left Wellington last week. He is going Home partly on bnsinsss and partly on pleasure. Before he left Wellington he was presented by the members of the Laboratory staff'- (through Dr. Maclaurin, the Dominion Analyst), with a gold-mounted fountain pen. A farewell to the Rev. R. Inglis,, M.A., and a welcome to the Rev. G. T. Brown, M.A., was given at a large 1 gathering of Knox Church. Masterton, i member* and friends last" week. During the evening a presentation was made to Sir. and Mrs. Inglis of the sum of £54- in notes to mark the high appreciation held of their labours in Knox Clinrch and the district during the a.bsence of the Rev. G. T. Brown at the front for the past two years. The.Rev. L. Thompson presided, and addresses were given by the Revs. Catherwood, Moderator of the Presbytery, Halliday, and Cocker. Mr. E. Feist, session cleric, mr.de the presentation. At the invitation of the Carterton congregation, Mr. Inglis takes charge there ur.lif the Rev. E. J. Tipler has sufficiently recovered from his wounds received at the front, to enable him to take up his work again.
