DEATH OF A PRISONER

NAPIER, 30th May.
The man John Peat, who was admitted to hospital yesterday from Napier Gaol, died-at noon to-day. It is supposed that he died of cerebro-spinal meningitis, but the causa of death will not he established until bacteriological examinations, which are now being made, are completed. ' An inquest will be held.
[When Peat, who wits arrested in Wellington, charged with theft, appeared before the Magistrate's Court at Napier on Tuesday, he acted peculiarly, and a medical certificate put in said accused was pretending insanity, and had so done while waiting in gaol. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed- to the*" Supreme Court for sentence and removed to gaol. Pe:it is a single man, who was omployed at the Hawkes Bay Club. He had only been in Napier a few months. Ib is alleged that he wa3 preparing to leave the country when arrested in Wellington on a- charge ot stealing a revolver from the Sawkes Boy Club."!
