Captain Eidswag, of the barquentiue Alta, from Melbourne, reports a South Sea mystery. He discovered unknown castaways on Flint Island, -in the Polynesian group, where he was blown by storms. ,He made a futile attempt to rescue, .trying to reach the marooned people in a lifeboat, which capsized in the swift tides among the treacherous reefs. He was then forced to sail away. Two days later the attention of the Alta's crew was attracted by fires on the island, on which several persons were discernible. Flint Island is far out of the trade routes.
