SANITARY INSPECTORS
QUESTION OF APPOINTMENT OF
WOMEN,
The question of city sanitation was referred to by the Finance and Property Committee of the City Council in its report to the council last night, as under : "That applications be called for two additional inspectors for the Sanitary Department, returned soldiers, if qualified, to be given the preference." The Mayor said he regretted exceedingly that the committee did not agree to the appointment of a woman inspector, and a deputation on the- subject was going to interview him at 11 o'clock on Saturday morning. He hoped all the councillqrs would be present. x Councillor P. Fraser 'moved to increase the number of new inspectors to four, two of whom shall be" women. The condition of some properties in the city, he said, was a. disgrace; in many cases the conveniences were entirely insufficient. A comprehensive scheme should be brought down by the Engineer at the earliest possible moment.
The Mayor said that Chief Inspector Doyle had assured the committee that two additionalyinspectors were sufficient to cope with the work.
Councillor M'Kenzie expressed the hope that Mr. Fraser, in his position as a member of Parliament, would assist the Mayor in obtaining.greater powers for the council. . ./\ '. Councillor Fraser : Why not use the powers' you have got ? Councillor M'Kenzie said one of the chief extra powers required was the right of entry during a longer portion of the day. . . Councillor Frost said he was assured by Inspector Doyle that he wanted certificated men for the work. The committee, he was sure, would later on go into the question of appointing a lady inspector.
The amendment was lo6t by nine votes to four.
On the motion of Councillor Forsyth it was decided that the question of appointing women inspectors be reported on by the committee at its next meeting.
