CONFERENCE CLOSED
VARIETY OF SUBJECTS DISCUSSED
The conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Wellington Provincial District, has now cor.eluded its business. Additional remits passed by the conference are as follow : —
Waverley.—That the Government be urged to proceed, vigorously with the development of electrical power from Arapuni Falls, as on account of its central position and high power it would be of immense benefit to a large area of the North Island.
Maiterton. —That the Agricultural Department be requested to declare "Lantana" a noxious shrub, and prohibit any Lantana seed being imported into this country.
Waverley.—That the Department of Agriculture be aoked to institute research for the purpose of finding means to cope with the creeping ar water fern, whicli is a great pest to settlers on the highlands' of the North Wellington and T'aranaki provinces.
Te Horo.—That the attention of the Minister of Finance be called to the present unsatisfactory matters in connection with State and private moneylending' institutions. 'That where security is good the State should provide money at reasonable rates for farmers' needs, and should restore the table system of ■ mortgage, and provide in. every mortgage covenant for jiayment of sums before; due date without forfeiture of interest. Marton. —That the attention of the Minister for Railways be drawn to the great inconvenience that farmers suffer, in regard to the shortage of both trucks and (sheets, that occurs at this time of year, which greatly hampers the loading of grain, chaff, potatoes, etc.
Mangaweka.—That the Railway Department be requested to keep the railway fences running through private lands in a better state of repair, failing that, the Department to be held responsible for any loss to stock caused thereby. Feilding.—That in view of, the serious menace aggregation of land is becoming to the welfare of the country, the Government be urged to take more effective measures to prevent same. Marton.—That the Fanners' Union desires to congratulate tho Hon. Mr. Mas-, sey upon having secured one-third .interest in the - phospha^f deposits on Nauru Island.
Waiks-nae.—That in view of the ex-. cellent results from the adoption of preferential voting in Australia, the same system shall without further delay be embodied in the Electoral. Law of New Zealand. (Carried by 13 votes to 12.) Executive.—That branches be recommended to fix their subscriptions on a graduated scale.
Waverley.—That the protection be removed from Califomian , quail, so that their 'numbers may be reduced.
Executive, —That- presidents of subprovincial districts be members ex-officio of tho provincial executive.

M'Leavey, Palmerston North. H. ,A. Nevins, Tinui, 'H. Morison, Greytown, 0. C. .Jackson, Mauriceville,/ T. Haycock, Martinboroiigh, H. A. Bunny, Carterton, N. Small, jnr., Pahi.atua, with Messrs. Hugh' Morison, Master-ton, president of the Wairarapa district, and H. Vile, president of-the Manawatu district, ex-officio members.
It was decided to hold the next conference at Feilding. '
