MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. W. (i. Riddell, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court today. The following charges of drunkenness were dealt with .'"Charles William Hobday*, fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment', Pet*r Robertson 10s, or 24hours; Albert White, 40s, or seven days; John James Cotterlll, 20s, or 24 i hours. Samuel Doherty was convicted and ordered to pay 17s 6d costs, in default to undergo 48 houfe' imprisonment. Walter Joy, who has been before the court several times and remanded on a chargo of having failed to mako provision for the maintenance of a child in South Australia, was again brought forward. Constable M'Cabe, from South Australia, produced tho warrant, and asked that accused should be returned to ' South Australia in his custody. Accused had been arrested at Reikiorangi. The application wa« granted. Chief Detective Broberg conducted tho prosecution. George Bradley was fined 6s, with costs 7s, for allowing horses to wander. , For failure to close their shops at the statutory closing hours, Edward John Pascoe and Frank Grovo were- each fined 10s, with costs 7s. Queree Bros. Were fined 10s, and costs 7s, for keeping employees engaged after 9 p.m. on 25th January. For failing to attend military drills, Stahley John Friis and Henry Marshall were fined 20s, with costs 7s, and John Hughes and Clarence Williams were ordered to pay 7s cbgts. Ellen Reidler was ordered to pay 3s per week for the support of a child. Hugh Steffert was charged with assaulting Harold Victor Morgan, at Ngahauranga, on 10th February. ChiefDetective Broberg said that tho trouble arose out of tho butchers' strike, defendant being a butcher who went on Btriko. The complainant was a general labourer employed at Ngahauranga works, and when lie ceased work ho proceeded along the main road to Johnsonville. He met defendant, a who a struck him on tho head with v, stick, inflicting a bcaip >vound about an inch long. Defendant was -fined £3, iv. default fourteen days' imprisonment, 7
