Sir George Reid, High Commissioner for Australia, remarked that all knew when farewellitig Captain Scott that he had staked his life, " but concerning this story of hourly terrific struggle, and death, this victory, this Bad though glorious martyrdom, that lonely widow speeding onwards to meet her gallant husband, the readiest tongue must be sileht."
