ENGLISH TENNIS VETERAN
. VISIT TO ' NEW ' ZEALAND. (From Our Own Correspondent). SYDNEY,. Bth February. Mr. E. G. Meers, who ■ fifteen years ago was a crack lawn tennfs player, is at present on a visit to Australia en route to New Zealand, where he 'has business interests. He was the covered court champion of the British .Isles .in 1892, and in the following year won, with May, the covered court doubles championship. 'Interviewed at Fremantle on lawn tehnis matters generally, Mr. Meers said that in his opinion the standard of play Was not, nearly so high at the piesent time as it was fifteen yeais ago, when l'im and Renshaw were in their prime. The service had greatly improved, but the _ ground play was much inferior. Whilst Brookes's service was puperb, his ground play left much to be desired.
