FIRE IN THE CITY

GOOD WORK BY THE BRIGADE. The prompt arrival and excellent work of the Fire Brigade last evening prevented what promised .to be' at one time a big blaze, on the corner of Grey and Featherston streets. A few minutes after 11 o clock flames were seen to burst from an old wooden building immediately opposite the General Post Office. The fire had a good hold when the brigade arrived, but, , though the premises were very old and very inflammable and there :was a" heavy wind, the brigade, afded by a good pressure of water, subdued the conflagration in about twenty I minutes. The fire is said to have originated in C. Bryant's picture-film store ohthe upper floor, Superintendent Tait having, expressed the opinion that -the- seat 6f the blaze was one of the .back rooms of the upstairs passage, where remains of fihhp were discovered.
