In reply to the council's application for payment of the sum of 12s, the amount advanced 'to the Fire Brigade for watching after f a recent fire at T&' Momi, the United Insurance. Company wrote to say it was unable to do anything in the matter, as all claims on 'this Account should be made to the Underwriters' Association. In this connection the Town Clerk was instructed to write- to the Underwriters' Association, to ascertain .what arrangement* it is prepared to make with the council in respect to looking after a fire. , The Railway Department wrote, confirming arrangements as to co-operating with the council in laying gas-pipes for the purpose of lighting the crossing at Melling Railway Station. A lettfer was received from Mr. J. Dawson in reference to the proposed redecking of Melling Bridge, expressing the opinion that the 3in planks proposed to be put down would increase the dead weight unduly. He. could not accept responsibility should an accident occur in consequence of increasing the weight as proposed. It was resolved to hold a special i meeting of the council . in this respect, and that Mr. Dawson bfe invited to attend. ■ Gracefield Co., Ltd., wrote, stating that it was commencing drainage operations on its property at Gracefield. It asked the council to arrange for the pipe culvert to be lowered as early as possible. — Referred to the engineer. The engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche), in his fortnightly report, stated that the work of tarring and sanding was now complete. It had taken longer and cost more for labour and tar than he had anticipated, but he ventured to predict that it would stand longer without further mat&teimiice than any other work of the kind in the 'borough. The cost, so far as accounts had como 'in,' had totalled £356 6s 9d. Tho extension of tlie shafting *was almost complete, only the pulley and belting remaining to be fixed. He expected to get a run- with B. engine (at the end of the new shaft extension) about the middle . of next week. The cost to date totalled £48 13s. The ehed over the pump, ttie erection of which was begun last week, would probably' be 'completed by this It would be ready by the time the spares came to hand. Tenders were being called for centrifugal pumps, to be in by next meeting. The report was adopted, and the Works Committee is to report as to the tarring and sanding.
