MAGISTRATE'S COURT
In the Magistrate's Court on Saturday before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., Jean Dalziel, charged with drunkenness and being an idle and disorderly person, in that she had insufficient lawful means of support, pleaded guilty, and wa« sent to the Salvation Army Home for six months. For drunkenness, Robert Cate was remanded for a week for curative treatment ; Bernard Cronin was fined 10s, with the alternative of forty-eight hours' imprisonment; John O'Leary was fined 20s, in default three days' imprisonment ; and a first offender was fined ss, or twenty-four hours' imprisonment in default. James Oliver Armstrong, charged with stealing a bicycle of the value of £4, the property of Albert Edward Dimock, fruiterer, Aro-street/ on- the 7th > inst. , was sent to gaol for one month. Stanley Thomas Craig, an A.B. on the steamer Eemuera', charged with absenting himself from the ship without leave, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. He will be placed on board if the ship sails before the expiration of that period, ' , William Bain was remanded to Timaru on a charge of having stolen a bicycle there, the property of William Souter, on or about October, 1912. Albert. Ernest Carter was charged that on or about October, 1912, at Wellingtons he did unlawfully use an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. ■He was also charged .with the theft of a coaster hub, value 235, the property of Joseph Boucher. ' Chief-Detective Broberg said the first charge was based on a statement made by accused to Detective Rawle, and he asked for a remand to enable enquiries to be made. A remand was granted to tfie 14th inst. 1 Francis Augustus Thurston, alias Frederick George, alias George Thursley, was charged .with having stolen 3lbs of Derby tobacco, valued at 22s 6d, the iroperty o! Sun Young Kee and Co., at Wellington, on the 7th inst. It was alleged that about 5.30 yesterday evening the accused went to the prosecutor's shop in Molesworthstreet and asked for 2lbs of Derby tobacco. When the tobacco was placed oh the counter accused picked it up, and ran off with it. After a long chase by the Chinaman, who had produced the tobacco, accused was captured in the Hotel Cecil. He was convicted and sent to gaol for a month. At the Mount Cook Court on Saturday several cases of drunkenness were dealt with. Two first-offenders were convicted and discharged, John Kershaw was mulcted in a sum of 10s, with the option Of spending forty-eight hours' in gaol, and M. M'Pherson waa fined 20s, in default threu days' imprisonment.
