RIFLE SHOOTING
' *> SATURDAY'S MATCHES Rifle shooting at Trentham on Saturday was carried on under tho rathor unfavourable conditions of a tricky wind and a baffling light. Nevertheless, there was some vdry creditable shooting. Appended are accounts of the principal matches : — KARORI v. DEFENCE AND OLD NAVALS. Tho Karori Riflo Club fired teams matches against tho Defence 1 Staff Rifle Olub^ and the Old Navals' Club.' The conditions in the first match were seven shots at 300, 500, and 600 yards, and in tho match against the Old Navals seven shots at 300 and 500 yard*. At tho finish of the 300 yds range in the former matoh, the Staff, team held an advantage of ll points, which was increased to a lead of 13 points at 500 yds. At the concluding range, however, tho Karoi'i tedm . managed to make good the deficit, and secured a win by one, point. The top score for the match was made by Rifleman J. Burns, of the Karori Club, who notched 98 out of the possible 105. Tho next best score was 93, put on by Rifleman F. W. Cbiflg, of the Staff Club: ' Tho matoh .against, the Old -Navals'.' Club resulted ia a somewhat eaiy < Win for Karori by 81 points. Riflemen G. Tinney ahd J. . E._ Turner .both shot yreWf the former putting on 68 out of tji<? possible 70, and 'the latter 67. The Suburbs Defence Rifle Club eon* tinued the trophy shooting at Miramar on Saturday, at ranges 600 and 700 yards, for trophies presented by Messrs. Hempton and Bcllamore, Witcombe and Pym, and the club. An eight-inch bullVeye
uas used at 700 yards. The bebfc at 500 yards was by T. J. Chapman, with 47, and at 700 yards by C. J. Fisher and J. A. Moss, each with 44 apiece, Ros? winning on the count back, and securing the silver spoon for the "best score at 700 yard*. A special prizp has been donated by Mrs. W. M. Jackson, lady vice-presi-doiit of the club, to be allotted to the member who fecures the leaU number of . misses at 700 and • 1000 yards. Mr. W M. Jackson lias also donated a special prize for the least number of misses* over the whole of the championship series. The club will continue their shooting on Wednesday at Miramar, finishing their necond match in the fourth series at 60 yards.
