The Norddeittfseher Lloyd liner SchaTtthorst, while crossing the Indian Ocean en route to Australia on 19th January, vibrated violently from end to end with a ahock resembling that given if the engines had been run full hpeed astern. The startled passengers rushed on to the deck, and found the ship proceeding as usual in a delightfully calm sea in clear moonlight. The shock was explained fts being due to a submarine earthquake. It lasted 45 seconds.
