UNION'S DEMANDS
I PARTICULARS OF AN AGREEMENT. j (BY TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) I CHRISTCHURCH, 7th February. The conference between representatrves of Uie Canterbury Freezing Workers' Union and of the Christchurch and Canterbury Frozen Meat Companies, which opened yesterday, was concluded to-day, when the parties arrived at an agreement in respect to the union's demands. Steps will be taken at once to make the agreement an instrument of the Court of Arbitration. Mr. F. C. Ellis, secretary of the union, supplied a reporter with the following particulars of the agreement by the parties : — Eight hours are to constitute a day's work, which is to be regulated by slaughtering operations ; all hours worked beyond eight &hall be considered overtime, and shall be paid at the rate of time and a quarter for the first two hours, and time and a half afterwards. Rates of pay for ae&istants aTe to be as follow : — Eighteen years of age and ''<ver, Is 2gd per hour. If on any day workers are ordered to commence "work, and if the work done on that day shall be less than four hours, workers snail, nevertheless, be paid as if they had worked- four hours on that day. Employment of Youths. — From Id to 15 years, 15s; 15 to 16 years, 17s; 16 to 17 years, 20s; 17 to 18 years, 255. Holidays will be the safne as for slaughtermen. When the holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be observed. No slaughtering for export is to be done on holidays or Sundays, but, on Easter Monday, King's Birthday, and Boxing Day, employers shall be at liberty to employ such of their employees as they require for a period of four hours for the purpose if slaughtering stock for local consumption only, and shall receive time and a half for such work. As to preference, employers may employ any worker they ohoose provided that, within one week of the date of his engagement, a worker shall become and remain a member of the union. to workers who requite them by the employers. It is understood that tho agreement will be for a term of three years.
