The Navy League entertained Sir Joseph Ward at luncheon. Responding to a toast, Sir Joseph said he looked forward to the time when the Imperial fleet would be so effective that other nations would hesitate to try conclusions with it. The Hon. James Allen paid a tribute to Australia's great sacrifice. She had spent £4,500,000 to protect her people. DEFENCE COMMITTEE ATTENDED BY MR. ALLEN. (Received February 7, 8 a,m.) LONDON, 6th February. The Hon. James Allen, New Zealand Minister for Defence, attended a meeting of the Imperial Defence Committee. AUSTRALIA'S HEADWAY. NEWSPAPER CONGRATULATIONS LONDON, 6th February. The Times congratulates Australia on the rapid headway of her navy. She is already in embryo a new centre of naval power, with the first basis ( of the estab« lishments required to build' and man her own fleet. The Pacific' is riot at present a threatened sphere, and there is time to frame a policy in accordance with the desires of the various Dominions. The Standard also pays a tribute to Australia's efforts, as evidenced in the building of the cruisers Melbourne, Sydney, and Australia, which, though unita of ,a fleet intended primarily for self-dc« fence, will also uphold Britain's supremacy in far-off seas.
