Drum and fife bands appear to be "taking on" with public school boys and senior cadets in various parts of the Dominion. Boys' bands of this nature have already been formed in Wellington, the most recent being in connection with the Newtown (St. Thomas's) Senior Cadet Corps. According to the fifth half-yearly .report of the Ponsonby (Auckland) Boys' Drum and Fife Band, that organisation had, during the last six months, assisted in the formation of numerous bands in the northern city. The report further states.: — "At the present time a governing body, called 'The New Zealand Juvenile Musical As* I sociation,' is being formed, and if the objects and intentions are realised a big impetus will bo given to this forward movement, «is we are all desirous of giving every boy in the Dominion a fair chance in life, and we see no reason why the opportunity of learning (free of cost) .art in all its branches should not also eventually be extended to the boys." Towards the end of last year the Ponsonby boyfi visited Thames, with the result that a band has been started in that town, with a membership totalling 140 boys. They contemplate at Easter a visit of 40 boys to Wellington, Palmerston North, and Wanganui, in the hope that it will be the meano of starting new bands.
