' Ml', Herbert Stock, of the -Treasury staff, who recently underwent an operation in a private hospital, has recovered sufficiently to return to his home. Mr. .E. J. Le Grove has also left the pri•vate hospital, where he had been under treatment for some time, and is well enough to take open-air exercise. A Woman named Jessie Holt, who was found in a serious condition at her house in Lome-street on 31st January, died at the hospital last night. The doctor who attended her has given v certificate that death was due to natural causes,, and no inquest will be held. The Federal-Shire steamer Westmeath, due at day-break to-morrow, was held up at Auckland on Tuesday evening, owing to the desertion of six firemen. Af- j ter a delay of about five hours the trouble was overcome, and the vessel sailed for Wellington just upon ten i o'clock. The steamer was ready for sea shortly before 5 p.m., says the New Zealand Herald, when it was found that six of the 'firemen had Half-an-hour later she backed into the stream, and anchored while the local agent for' the company, Mr. J. Patterson, and the second engineer endeavoured to secure men to fill the vacancies. There were numbers of capable men on the wharves, but they refused the offer of £5 each and a fare back from Wellington for the run, and demanded £10 apiece — a j demand the agent treated as absurd, while the engineer stated tiiat he would rather pay extra money to the men on j board. Although six men had deserted the Wc3tmeath still ,had enough firemen on board to satisfy the requirements of | the Board of Trade regulations. The remaining firemen at first refused to go to work until-. the six deserters were replaced, but eventually they agreed to fire the ship to Wellington on condition that they were given a bonus on arrival. This suggestion was approved by Mr. Patterson, and accordingly the Westmeath weighed anchor just before ten o'clock. Iti is understood that the men who left the vessel allege that the firemen's quarters on the Westmeath I were in a filthy condition. On the ar- ! rival of the steamer at Sydney several men deserted from her, and others were j secured to fill their places. The garden fete to be opened by Her Excellency Lady Liverpool on Saturday, the Bt-h instant, promises to be a success. Tho fete is in aid of the- funds for the Plunke't nurses, and will be held in the Prime Minister's garden.
