' »i — In the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr. W. G. lliddell, S.M., Lilian Ormond and Alfred Brewer were fined, for drunkenness, ss, or twenty-four hours' imprisonment in default) Jolin M'Carthy was fined 10s ? or forty-eight hours' in default ; John Mansfield was* sent to gaol for a month ; and two fij'st offenders were convicted and discharged. Frank Quade, a greaser on the 's.s. Turakina, pleaded guilty to having deserted tho vessel. He was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment, and to bo placed on board if the vessel sails before the expiration of that period. An old man named John Webb was charged with being an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient means of support. On the application of 'the police, he was remanded until tomorrow.

Grievances' of some telegraph operatore, which recently found expression | through the press, were referred io by a deputiitipn of telegraphists which waited upon the Secretary of the Post ■ and Telegraph Department (Mr. W. It. Morris) yesterday. The speakers represented the younger telegraphists, as Well as the senior men, and they stated that thejr were ignorant of the grievances which had been recently ventilated by persons of whom they had .no knowledge. llegrt»t was ! expressed that publicity had been given I to incorrect and misleading statements about the working conditions of tele" i graph operators. Certain grievances, however, were brought under the notice I of the Department, and, as a result of the discussion, it is understood that a number of the suggestions made by tha deputation will be acceded to. The deputation made it perfectly clear to the j Secretary that its members had no sym- | pathy with the statements made by individual officers through tho press. It is understood that the views of the deputation will be forwarded to the Secretary'in writing. The ignition of some linen which was drying before a fire in a cottage of .six rooms (No." 60) in .Owen-street last' night was responsible for a good deal of dam- | age being done to the house and its contents. The brigade received a call at one minute before 9 o'clock. The dining room and its contents were ruined, and the kitchen ahd its-contents •badly damaged by flanie and water, while the remainder of the house Buffered from heat and smoke. The bouse, which is owned by Mr. Charles Harding, is insured in . tho New Zealand Company's Office for £400, and the United Company had a risk of -£2OO on the-con-tents. The occupier was Mrs. Annie Gallrfgher. The Prime Minister has received a cable message from the Hon. James Allen stating that the battle,-cruiser New Zealand leaves Portsmouth to-day for New Zealand, via South Africa. ! The officers of the Department of Agriculture are holding their annual picnic
