REPORTED CRUELTY TO SHEEP

CHRISTCHURCH, 4th Feb. At a meetiug of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Am'maJs, the inspector reported that on a certain Friday last month 3000 sheep landed from the Chatham islando were driven to paddocks, where they were left till Sunday morning, when as many as could walk were driven otocr the hills to Heathcote. The dajf was particularly hot, and the majority of the sheep were kuocked up. The sfieep were placed in a small paddock without food or water, and on Monday morning those that could bo removed were driven away. About one hundred dying sheep were left in the paddock. The inspector was instructed to place the facts before the society's solicitor, and to prosecute if co advised.
