LOCAL AND GENERAL The Commission of Enquiry into the management of the Public Trust Office has concluded its investigation, and has been given an extension of time to 31st March in which to make its report. Regarding the statements reported by cable to have been made by the Hon. Jas. Alien in London regarding the provision by New Zealand of an expeditionary force of 8000 men, the Hon. W. F. Maesey. is response to a question, said that what Mr. Allen had stated was merely a hope that in time of danger New Zealand would furnish a contingent, or contingents as was done on the occasion of the South African war, when about this numbor of volunteer troops was despatched from New Zealand to the assistance of the Mother Country. The Defence Act. did not contemplate the sending of expeditionary forces from the Dominion to places outside, and such a measure would obviously bavo to be sanctioned by Parliament. Hie reading of the cable was that Mi 1 . Allen had simply said he hoped the Dominion would oh a future occasion, if need be, furnish to tho Mother Country aid similar to that provided in the Boer war. There is a fear on the part of the Hutt County Council that its bridge at Akaiarawa will not be capable of bearing the Upper Hutt Town Board's water-main pipes to be used in the installation of the new water service authorised by the ratepayers some timo ago. The additional strain on the bridge caused by the pipes would be some eight tons on each side. At last night's meeting of the Town Board a suggestion was received from the Hutt body asking tho board to contribute five guineas, the cost of examination of tho bridge by the council's advisory engineer. This the board declined to do, and was of tho opinion that if the bridge is not strong enough to bear tho added weight it would be advisable to build a bridge of its own. . Tho board's engineer (Mr. Lfting Menson) advised strengthening the bridge with reinforced concrete, tho board to contribute approximately £350. With the same sum, the board could build a bridge of its own, independent of tho council.
