MOUNTAIN GUNS
STATEMENT BY MR. RHODES. •CHRISTCHURCH, 3rd February. The 1 Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, • ActingMinister for Defence, made a, statement to-day to 'a reported respecting certain allegations, published., in connection with the new mountain guns imported for- D Battery, Wellington. Mr. Rhodes said it- was true thatthe mount&iD guns sent out last- year by Messrs. Vickers-Maxim were not up ,todate, but it Was untrue that' this . fact is of 'recent, discovery. . From, the beginning it Was recognised that the guns, though. good, were not trtie quick-firers, and in other respects were not up to modern requirements. The guns- were purchased, on the advice of the New Zealand Government's ex-military adviser at Home, whose appointment was conse- ! quently determined. The firm of VickersMazim was communicated with, and requested to take the guns back, and this the firm finally consented to do.' It, is understood that the firm has secured another purchaser for them.^ ' The statement that the ammunition was not of the right calibre is untrue.. The -ammunition is suitable-, and would ' have been used in camp this year if the guns had -been retained. , \
