WORKING MEN'S CLUB
m The seventieth -half -yearly report of the Wellington Working Men's Club, to be presented to the members this evening, congratulates the club on the record established for the past twelve months'. The net profits amount to £1194, leaving the sum of £909 3s 6d to be carried forward after paying for Christmas tree, repairs to social hall and bars, limewashing the front, law costs, etc. A year ago the club, , owed £1675 (mortgage and outstanding accounts). This amount has been reduced to £396. The last sum of the mortgage account (£500) has now been paid off and the club is practically free of debt. The report states that the activities of the club have been well maintained during the year, and reference is made to the work of the club's fine Orchestra (uhder the leadership of Mr. John M'Glashan), the chess and draughts section, billiardroom, domino and card tournaments, etc. Regret is,, expressed at- a slight falling- j off in subscriptions, which is attributed ' to the unsettled state of the labour market. Mr. Edward Mace is the retiring president, and Mr. J. M'Nie has been elected unopposed to fill the position.
