OBITUARY

LORD ILKESTOjST. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— -Copyright. (Received February 1, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 31st January. The death is reported of Lord Ilkeston. LBaron Ilkeston, the celebrated physician, was a son of Balthazar Foster, Beaulieu, Hants. He was educated at Drogheda Grammar School, and Trinity College, Dublin. He subsequently became Professor- of Medicine at Queen's College, Birmingham, and from 1868-90 acted as physician to the Birmingham General Hospital. ,He was President of Council from 1884-87, and received the gold medal for Distinguished Merit in connection with the British Medical Association, in 1897, and was a member of the General Medical Council 1886-96. Baron Ilkeston subsequently entered Parliament as member for Chester, 1885--86, was Parliamentary Secretary to Local Government Board, 1892-95, chairman of the National Liberal Federation, 1886--1890, President of the Allotments and Small Holdings Association 1892, and President of the Land Law Refoim Association 1899-1908. He again entered Parliament for the Ilkeston Division of Derbyshiie, 1887-1910. and received the Freedom of Ilkeston in 1904, and was created Baron in 1910. Baron Ilkeston was the author of several valuable publications. He married Emily, the daughter of W. L. Sargant, Edgbaston, and has one son, Hon. B. Stephen S. Foster, who succeeds to the title, and three daughters.]
