(By Iluka.) ■ WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tho annual championship meeting held oil the Masterton Club's courts were completed successfully last week, under tho able management of H. M. Boddington, thn club's popular hon. secretary, vho had an able and willing body of workers to asfiibt him. The president of tho clvb — Dean. M'Kcnna — did his best to induce a parly of plajors from Wellington, but most of the players who had been away at Christmas had had a surfeit of tennis, consequently a team could not, bo got together Those who did attend, however, had a very fine hohdny. In tho men's championship singles, Ilowden, by beating £. K. Gawith, 7-5, 6-4, in the semi-final, met Warno Pcarso in tho final. The ever-popular Temuka. player took tho chainpknibhip, beating Howdon, 6-1, 6-1. In tho championship doubles final Pearsc and A. T. Spain beat J. Martin and S. li^ Gawith, 6-4, 6-4. A third ehaninior* ship fell to Pcarso in tho combined, as with Miss lluby Well wood, the Temukallaslings combination beat MKs D. Booth and Roydhoubc, 9-3. The ladies' championship singles fell to Miss Ruby Wcllwood, but she had to work hard for. her win. She beat Mi«-s R. llughcp, of Pahiatua, 9-3, in the final, but L. M. Hughes ga\o the Hastings player a great run in an earlier round, > and was only beaten 0-7 Mi^s Tonnant, of WoUiiiglon, beat Miss C. Booth, 9-8, in the championship, but went down badly to Mifs E. Hughes, 9 love. In tho ladies' championship doubles Misses Tenuant and R Hughes did well to win the event from Mibsq= R. Wellwood and F. M'Bcth — I he AVellingtonPahiatua players scoring 9 games to 4. G. R. Thyme- (30) beat W. W. Gabites (35) 70-b2, in tho final o£ the nion's handicap singles, and Roydhyuso ami Maunsell (15) beat Caselberg and Boddington (30), FO-52, in the final of the double*. Gabites and Mrs. llulme, Blenheim, (50) beat Martin and Miss R. Hughes, 50 47 ia the final of tho combined handicap. In Iho ladies' doubles handicap, the Wellington-Pahiatua pair — Misses Tennant and R. Hughes — showed good combination, and from scratch mark boat Misses L. D. and L. M. Hughe (5), 50-31, in the final. The ladies' handicap singles produced some fine games, but Miss L. M. Hughes showed good form right through, and deserved her win, although she was well in, haying a start of ten points. She beat Miss R. Hughes (scr.), 50-43, in the semi-final, and in the final held Miss Booth (rec. 15) very .safely, beating her 50-39. TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Taranaki tournament was well attended, competitors entering freely, and spectators were numerous on all days. Ollivier was the only star visitor, and ho captured tho championship, bonlmr; Wallace, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 in (ho final. Dickie and Wallace, tho holdms of tho doubles championship, defended puccorsfully, beating Ollivier and Griffiths 79. 6-1. 6-3 in the final. In the laches' championship singles, Miss D Simpson had a good fight with Mrs. Jolies, lioalmg her 2-6, 6-3, 6-5; then in the semifinal Miss Rundlo beat the winner, 6-2, 6-2. In the semi-final of the other half. Miss V. Simpson and Miss Brewstcr, tho holder of the c\ent, had a great struggle. The heat was terrific, and must ha\c been moat trying for both plp^crs. Glasgow and Ollivioi, 6-5, 6-5, and on tho other half Mrs. Wallace and Wallace boat Miss Brew-tor nnd Pcorso, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. In tho final, Mrs. Wallace and Wallace boat Miss Thompson and Dickie, 6-1, 6-1. The handicap singles, A grade, went to S. Powdrcll (5), of Patoa, who boat Loo (25), of Temuka, 60-51. The B grade final fell to F. A. Bajnfield (20), of tho Park Chib, who beat Rydo (per), of Waitara, 60-57. The doubles foil to tho • Patea pair, Powdrell brothers (5), who beat Cowan and Evans (10), of Gi=borne, 60-43. Mrs. Birch-Johnston and Miss Rundlo (10) won the ladies' handicap doubles from Mesdames Payne and Jones (scr), 50-34. Miss Thompson and E. W. Griffiths (rec. 10) were successful in tho combined handicap doubles, beating Miss Webster and Webster (roc. 20) 60-48. Mii-s Brewster ii a, great handicap player, for s-lie not only Avon the Dannevirke handicap single, but also the handicap at, the Taranaki meeting. The Danncvirkc final was played at New Plymouth, and Miss Brewslcr beat Mi's Simpoon 50-32. In tho Taranaki handicap tomifinals Mrs. Powdrell (rec. 5) beat Miss Rundlo (her.) 50-43, and Miss Brows-tor (owes 10) boat Mrs. Wright (rec. 20) 53--51. In, a previous round Miss Brewster beat Mrs. Payne (owes 5) 60-52. Then in the linal Miss Browstor won the e-\ent from Mrs. Powdrell 50-46. On looking at Mibs Bre\\6ter's performance in the handicap, one can hardly understand how !>he lost the championship, except, perhaps, that sho was in too many events, and her strength failed when the pincn came.
