CAPTAIN AMUNDSEN
SPLENDID DECEPTION AT TAXIS" Captain Hoald Amundsen, the hero of tho South l'olo discovery, had n triumphal reception in Paris on 16th December. At 7 in the morning ho was received at the Palace of the Elysee by the President of tho Ilepublic. who expressed to the cTplover his admiration of tho daring voyage to the South Polo, and afterwards conferred on him the rank of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour. Captain Amundsen is already a Commander of the French National Order, and the Grand Cross Js very rarely conferred upon foreigners \rho are not members 6f Eoynl families or ambassadors. Captain Amundsen was afterwards entertained at luncheon by the Norwegian Minister. Among the gueste were if. and Almo. Raymond Poincare. and several other members of the Government, tho Prince of Monaco. Dr. Cha.rcot. the veil-known French South Pole explorer, and a number of prominent Parisians. In the afternoon he was received at tho Hotel de Ville by the Municipal Council. When Captain Amundsen airived all the councillors and Uieir guests roso and cheered him. M. Galli, president of the Municipal Council., the Prefect of the Seine, and M. Lepine. Pro feet of Police, welcomed the explorer, and recalled his brilliant achievements. Aft pi* a few words qf thanks Captain Amundsen signed the "livre dor" of the Hotel de Ville, and was shown over the famous buildin?. At 9 o'clock this evening an official reception toas held in honour of the explorer at the Sorbonue. by the French Geographical Society. The large and* distinguished audience warmly cheered Captain Amundsen when, after a speech by Prince Eoknd Bonaparte, he rose to give his illustrated lecture on his journey to the* Pole. The lecture was a triumph for Captain Amundsen, and when' Prince Roland Bonaparte" handed him tho gold medal of the Geographical Society the cheering lasted for several minutes. A bronze medal was also presented to Captain Amundsen in the name of the Normans of Paris, and the ceremony concluded with a speech from M. Guist'hau, Mbiister of Public Instruction, who congratulated Captain Amundsen on behalf of the French Government.
