GORDON'S PRAYER-MAT
IN KIiARTOUM MEMORIAL CHAPEL. A telegram from Khartoum, dated 16th December, says:— A gift of extraordinary interest, received by Bishop Gwynno from one of General Gordon's family, has just been brought by tho latter to Khartoum, viz., tho "prayer-mat" used by Gordon when Governor in the Sudun from 1875 to 1879. It ib a piece of woollen ueediowork about a yard long and 18in t wide, ami is the thing a devout Moslem would always carry with him to kneel on when praying. Gordon adopted tho same idea for his own use. The mat has been placed for tho present in, the Gordon Memorial Chapel in tho cathedral hore as a *'knceler" in tho sanctuary, and this will probably bo its permanent place, so that it will not become^ mcro show.picco for sightseers, but will bo continually in use for its original purpose The Gordon Chapel has only temporary furniture in it ut present, nor is tho stone work of tho sanctuary steps yet built ; but when funds admit this will be undertaken, and if this prayer-mat lits iho stops it will probably be decided to keep it there permanently.
