LOCAL AND GENERAL ■ " ♦ It has been arranged, as already announced, that Hospital Saturday and Sunday shall be observed on 15th and 16th February. At 3 o'clock on Monday afternoon next a meeting of the Ladies' Committee will be held in the board's office to arrange for stations. Reports bearing on the recent Labour Conference at Wellington were presented to the Trades and Labour Council last evening, and reasons were advanced why the council should accept the invitation to attend the July conference. The following resolution was carried: "That in order to do our utmost to bring about unity in the ranks of Labour, this meeting affirms the desirability of the district council, all trade unions, branches of the United Labour Party, and other 1 affiliated bodies being represented by j delegates at the forthcoming July conference." Some months ago, boys and girie of Roseneath School, Wellington, sent to the children of Roseneath School, Glasgow, a New Zealand flag, specially inscribed. It was unfurled upon arrival by H.R.H. the Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, with t suitable ceremony. Yesterday the Minister for Internal Affairs received through the High Commissioner an acknowledgment of the gift, with an appreciative letter from Her Royal Highness and the Duko of Argyll, written from Roseneath House, under date 21st October, 1912, as follows : —"The Roseneath School in Scotland, near Glasgow, sends this flag to Roseneath School near Wellington in New Zealand, with feelings of deep interest and friendship, rejoicing in their affection and loyalty for their King and the Old Country. ' We }oin with the Roseneath School in praying that you may prosper and for God's blessing on you all.— (Signed) Louise Argyll." The letter was accompanied by the Scottish National flag, bearing a suitable inscription. The flag will be transmitted v to Roseneath School, and will probably be unfurled by His Excellency the Governor on his return to Wellington. , An unexpected advance has taken place in the market for potatoes, but authorities anticipate a shaip decline shortly. Local onions are coming in freely, and are rather slow of sale. Eggs have risen considerably, and are in ready demand. Butter is steady, cheese dull. There is a fair demand for poultry wherequality is right. Porkers are selling freely at slightly higher rates, doubtless due to the cooler weather. Pollard has advanced 10s a ton, due to short Bupply. Pea meal is available and selling freely 5 wheat ahd oats are steady, but. very little is being done in chaff and hay. Strict enforcement of the residential clauses of the Land Act was fenced with some difficulty in a case that camo before the Wellington Land Board yes- , terday. According to tho ranger's report, a married woman had failed to reside on a section which Bhe had taken up. Instead, Bhe was living with her husband, also a Crown tenant, c on a section some distance away. Neither party could live with the other and yet retain the land loft vacant. , To retain both sections the couple would have to live apart. When the case came before the board yesterday, ihe Commissioner remarked that the lady should not have taken up the section in tho first place. A member of the board said he thought she would forfeit the land rather than her husband. The board decided to ask her to show cause why the lease should not be forfeited. In tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, John Henry Hooper, commission agent. Wellington, proceeded against Edward Law, of Shannon, farmer, for the recovery of £80 cominieeion claimed to be due in respect of tho sale of defendant's farm by plaintiff to one George Bell. Mr. F. B. Kelly appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. T. C. Hislop for defottdant. After hearing evidence, judgment wa& reserved until 6th. February. To-morrow Kirkcaldie nnd Stains, Ltd., will offer in connection with their summer sale extraordinary bargains in cotton fabrics, gauntlet gloves, and children's hosiery.— Advt.
