SWIMMING
MEETING OF CENTRE EXECUTIVE VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED. A meeting of the executive of the Wellington Swimming Centre was held last evening, Mr. J. F. Atkins presiding. There were also present Messrs. Somerville, Smith, Levy. Rona'yne, and Blick (secretary). . A letter was received from the Hawkes Bay Centre protesting against the council's action in allotting the New Zealand Championships for 1914 to Nelson. It was claimed that the conferencn of delegates in 1913 recommended that the championships should be allotted either to Otago or Hawkes Bay. It was. asserted that year after year the decisions of the conference were not taken the least notice of. My. Atkins said that in his opinion it was useless to hold the conferences each year. The council took no notice of the decisions arrived at. In regard, to the letter from Hawkes Bay, which asked the Wellington Centre for assistance, in regard to the matter, the delegate (Mr. Atkins) was instructed to use his own discretion at' the Wanganui conference. A 'letter was received from the secretary of the Canterbury -Centre, complimenting the Wellington swimmers at Sumner on the' occasion of the fecent attempted rescues. A sub-comrtiittee was set up to arrange a tournament between Wellington and Canterbury swimmers at Te Aro Baths on 13th February; The competition will include water-polo, a relay race, and diving. The teams will consist of seven men aside. The Hawkes Bay Centre Wrote stating that, as a result of the Australian carnival recently, there was a loss of £12. It was asked that Wellington should > make some contribution, but the executive decided that it had no money to spare jttst now. The Levin Club, wrote stating that it had fixed its annual carnival for Wednesday, 12th February. It was desired that Wellington swimmers and swimmers from other parts should attend the carnival on their way back from the championships. The matter was left to the manager of the team. It was decided to pay the expenses of Miss _Annie O'L'eary (Masterton),, who is to represent Wellington in the ladies' championship at Wanganui. This money, it is to be understood, will only be paid on consideration that the amount required is riot raised at Masterton. The secretary handed in a statement of finances, which showed a credit balance of £30 odd. The Star Boating Club was given permission to hold a swimming carnival on Bth February.' It was decided to recommend the Polo Committee to, arrange for matches to be played at the Thorndon Baths as well as at Te A*o. DEFINITION OF V AMATEUR." (B* TJBLKOftAMt— FfiESS ASSOCIATION.) Atkins, chairman of the Wellington Centre, requesting the council to alter the amateur definition so as to exclude Northern Union players. The writer threatened that the Wellington Union %vould secede if the request was not granted. It was decided to reply that _ the - present- definition "had been unanimously adopted by-delegates of all associations, in conformity with the definition' of the International Swimming Assotyaisldn, The jCouticil>had no intention Of altering' it. surprise was expressed At the threatening nature of Mr. Atkins's letter. , ' '
