LOWER HUTT. MR. H. BALDWIN'S ADDRESS.
Mr. H- Baldwin, who is contesting the Mayoralty of the Lower Hutt, addressed a number of electors at Alicetown on Saturday night. Mr. Macaskill occupied the chair. The . candidate explained the reasons for Iris candidature, and dealt with the finances of the borough. He showed how money accruing from rates was made up, and expressed himself strongly in favour of •a town hall. He claimed to be the originator of the "assistance" drainage scheme, which had been promoted in the interests of the working man. He complained that there was not enough committee work done by the present council, thns preventing councillors having a detailed knowledge of some of the borough affairs. As regards the maintenance of £oads, he recommended the purchase of a levelling plough. A motor fire-engine was needed for the Fire Brigade. As far as tramways were concerned, ihe was still in favour of laying eleven miles of track. It would be jusk as well to have another poll of ratepayers to decide the tramway question. After the usual vote, Mr. Baldwin announced that he would deal with financial affairs moie fully at a later meeting on Tuesday evening.
