SOUTH CANTERBURY LAND VALUES.
TIMARU, 22nd April. Mr. John Talbot, speaking at the Farmers' Union branch, said laild values in South Canterbury were unduly high. In ten years they had gone up" 75 to 11)0 per cent. It would be all right aa long cs prices kept up, but if the reverse came it would be all wrong. Ho supposed the reasons were absence- of oilier forms of investment and willingness of men to work land without a fair return on the capital invested. Speaking of small birds, Mr. Talbot said farmers lost as much grain by caterpillars n6w as beforo the birds were introduced and now lost grain enormously by birds.'
