SCULLING.
CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALIA., PEARCE DEFEATS KEMP. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright, SYDNEY, Z2nd April. Much interest was taken in the PearceKemp race for the sculling championship of Australia and £200 a-side, on tho Parramatta River, which took place to-day, Pearc© winning by twelve lengths. Pearce made a couple of false starts, apparently being anxious. Finally/ the competitors got away with a good start, both rowing forty to the minute. It was a hard race for three-quarters 'of a mile, when Pearc© was leading by a length. Then his weight and superior skill told, and he increased his tead. He was never afterwaids troubled. The judge's verdict made the win twenty lengths. Tho time was 20min 45sec. The Sun says Pearce is up to world's championship form, and should get a chance of tackling Arnst without delay. Arnst, who is aboard the Ulimaroa, was interviewed by wireless telegraphy. He declared that he would meet Pearce in ten weeks for £500 a-side. Pearce says this will suit him, and ho thinks he can get the backing. [Pearce has been the most successful sculler in New South Wales during the last few -months, and is one of the most promising men there. Ha weighs about list 71b in condition, and pulls with all the skill of his renowned father. During a chat with Pearce just after the latter had been challenged by Kemp, Dick' Arnst firmly refused to pull for the world's championship for less than £500 a-side. He told Pearce he, could have the .usual equal conditions in every other respect, that is, half the gate money and 6o on, but that the race must bs rowed before [ the end of May.]
