MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
To-day's sitting of tbe Magistrate^ Court was presided over Dy Mr. W. G. EiddeH, S.M. John Shannon pleaded not guilty to over-indalg-enoe arid a breach of prohibition, order, bat the -evidence wa£ against him. He was sentenced to one monife'e imprisoinnent for drunkenness, and convicted and discharged on the eecond charge. Gerald Co-yeney, charged' (1) ■with stealing onß pair of trousers valued at 10s, 'file property of Tbos. Costello, (2) stealing two pairs of boots valued at 13e, the property of Fanny Whittaker, was fined 20s on each. The alternative was fourteen days' detentioH. I John Reid., charged witli failing to ] provide bis wife with adequate means of eupport, was remanded to appear at Ch-nfitcnurch on. the 25th inst. A further remand until Monday was granted in tbe case of Jas. IM'Swigan, charged with, theft of a bicycle. A young man named Win. Oughton, was fined £5, with doctor's and witnesses' expenses (£1 2s 6d), with the option of one month's imprisonment, for assaulting Chas. Dunstan, an old man 63 years of age, who appeared in court with Ms face badly bruised and his head swat-bed in bandages. Defendant stated that he was under tbe influence of liquor, and knew nothing of the occurrence. Mr. T. Lachman, J.P., presided at this morning's sitting of the Mount Cook Police Court, and dealt with cases of drunkenness as follow : — Jean Dalziel was fined 40g, with an option of 14 days' imprisonment, while George Broker and Francis M'Guire were each convicted and discharged.
