LABOUR CONGRESS.
YESTERDAY'S BUSINESS. [by tblegbaph— pbbss association.] CHRISTCHURCH, 21st April. The -Trades and Labour Conference continued to-day and resolved that the incoming executive take the whole responsibility of arranging for the visit of Professor W, T. Mills, of Milwaukee. It was decided to send the following cable : — "Hughes, Acting-Premier, Melbourne, — The annual conference of delegates of all Labour Councils in the Dominion extend to you and y.our party greetings ; wish Labour success in referenda, and urge workers throughout the Commonwealth to vote solidly 'yes' on 26th." A Canterbury remit : "That the Govvernment be urged to provide a State ferry service between the North and South Island," was moved. Mr. W. T. Young moved the addition of /the words : "and also State-owned colliers, such vessels to be brought under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act." This was added to the remit, which was agreed to. A waterside workers' remit : "That the Minister of Justice be requested to bring down legislation compelling the police when summoning a coroner's jury to act on the inquest of any person killed or fatally injured while following his or her employment to summon (as far as possible) only workers engaged in the particular industry in which the deceased met death." This was adopted. The following was substituted for a waterside workers' remit : " That legislation be enacted to provide that where buildings are condemned as unfit, for human habitation they shall be immediately demolished, and the material condemned shall not be used for the erection of dwelling-houses or structures that will prove dangerous to health." This was carried. An Auckland remit — "That the Government be urged to bring down a Fail 1 Rent Bill " — was rejected in favour of a Wellington amendment — " That for the purpose of arriving at the principle of a fair rent, the conference endorse the principle of taxation on the unimproved value." A Wellington remit was moved — " That the Workers' Compensation Act b& amended " on the lines suggested by the last conference." After further discussion it was- decided to support — (1) Extension of the limitation to £6 per week; (2) the abolition of the domiciliaiy restrictions ; (3) the inclusion of domestic servants; (4) the repeal of section 58 of the Act; and (5) the taking over of all the insurances by I the State. j It was decided to hold the next conference at Wellington. InveiKjargill lost the distinction by one vote. The Chrißtchurch Council was ..appointed the executive for the year.
