' Acceptances for the Wellington Autumn Meeting are due on Monday. Final payments have also to be made in connection with the North Island Challenge Stakes and the New Zealand St. Leger. After declaration of forfeit on Ist) April twenty-two horses of various ages remained in the North Island Challenge Stakes, and although owners' intentions will not be made known until Tuesday, there is every prospect of an excellent contest. Unfortunately, neither Miscount nor Miss Winsome is engaged, and as the latter was not nominated for the Hawkes Bay Stakes it is probable that the last has been seen of her for this season. Culprit, Counterfeit, Orton, Peirene, Masterpiece, and Co. will have an opportunity of another meeting at Trent ham next Friday, however, and perhaps' the all important question as to the two-year-old supremacy may then, be finally determined. Each has incurred a substantial penalty, and if Madam. Madcap, Sunburnt, Penates, Vice-Admiral, and Gipsy Belle see the post the merits of 'the juvenile division will be thoroughly tested 1 . Flitaway also claims an eiigagementr> in this event, and if sh© should happen to be anything like in the same form as she was when she won the Challenge Stakes at Ric- - carton two years ago, she would keep the best of them busy. Her prepara^tion has been an interrupted one, however,' and it is unlikely that she will be seen at her post. 'The " cross-country horseman, William Cootes, who was born in Dunedin and rode for several years with success in Australia, recently returned to Melbourne. He has been in England during the past two or three seasons, and during an interview with a representative of_ the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News he said : — "Amongst prominent trainers of jumpers in England a,re A. Nightingall, Hartigan, Duller, P. Woodlands,, arid Eichard Wootton. Miss May Woodlands, a sister to P. Woodlands, used to own and train jumpers, but she recently retired. It was a common thing to see her riding a horse astride on the Epsom Downs. James Hayes, formerly of Melbourne, was training Scotch Laird, by Galashiels, when I left, but J. E. Brewer had no jumpers in hand. Amongst the leading cross-country riders were E. Pigott, Paddy Cowley, Frank Mason, E. Driscoll, J. Hare, and Percy Woodlands. The Australian jockey, W. Lea, was also doing a share of riding over .the jumps. When I left Melbourne, in September, 1907, it was my intention to ride in America, but Betting was abolished in several of the States, and race meetings consequently reduced, so I went on to London. " At Kempton Park i met Eichard Wootton, and entered his service. Wootton "has" a fine establishment, known as "Treadwell," at Epsom Downs. Hers he has 55 horee boxes, and when I left, late in February, these were all filled. His team included 25 two-year-olds, 10 jumpers, and 20 horses of other ages including a couple "of good fouf-yeax-olds, in Merrijax and Lonawand. Frank Wootton wa6 Tunning jinto weight.- In the -winter he weighed 8.10, and his brother, Stanley Wootton, . .weighed 3.4. Frank Wootton had an engagement to ride Eurodus in the Lincolnshire at 8.4. The Sydney boy, W. Huxley, is likely to do very well this season. He can still go to scale at 6.0, and will command plenty of riding from Wootton'a and other stables.- Richard WoottoiL .has-!gone largely, an." for progertj. ;JEfg ovfrns severalT.paddocks adjoining his stables, and he has also acquired a big property in New South Wales. I lode' a, number 'of winners during my sojourn in England, amongst them being Rambling, Rector, Barbarossa, Golden Ducat, and Retrenchment. Aly last win was about a fortnight before I lef}, for Melbourne. I rode the Australian horse Fabric in four hurdle xaces, and scored a second on him. Fabric was subsequently sold as a stallion. Hollander, by Holbrook — Zulander, another Australian horse brought to England by Wootton, is now running in harness. He won a Moderate. Hurdle at Plympton a few years ago." In Danube's absence Nithsdale, Kilosteri, and Bang Soult are the only three colte eligible to contest the St. Leger. Nithsdale was last seen out at Riccarton on 2nd February, when he went out unfancied for the Halswell Welter, in which he ran third to Romany Lad and Achray. It seems clear, therefore, that ie is a very moderate animal. King Soult was not nominated for any event at the A.R.C. autumn meeting, and the latest news from the North was to the effect that it was improbable he would be sent to Trent-ham.* Failing him the St. Leger seems likely to resolve into a match between Kilosteri and Nithsdale, i.e., if the latter is sent up, for whether he is still in commission or not I do not know. " No mention of him was made in the -Riccarton training notes prior to the autumn meeting however. Acording to a Christchurch paper Rurik recently changed hands at £200. More than this sum was given for him a month or two back, however, and as he has since won several races on the West Coast of the South Island it scarcely seems credible that his owner has parted with him for so moderate a sum. The A. J.C. meeting is being brought to a conclusion this afternoon, when the A. J.C. Plate, a sweepstake of 10 soys each, with 1500 soys added, three miles, will be decided. Comedy King is not to tackle Tra-falgar over so lengthy a course, and it is unlikely that Lady Medallist will compete. The last named claims another engagement in the Final Handicap, for which Flavinius, Eric, Nuwaia Eliya, Morilla, Apple Pie, Malt King, Byplay, Electric Wire, Son of the March, Beverage, Desert Eose, Gold Thread, Blairgour, and Broadsword were also nominated.
