BRITISH PEOPLE FOR CANADA.
AN EXPECTED, RECORD. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. OTTAWA, 20th April. British immigrants are arriving at Vancouver at th& rate of 200 daily. It is believed that immigration to the Dominion, during the coming season will exceed all records. . [About ten years ago — that is, in 1900 — nearly 48.000 people went from Great Britain to the United States, and only 7803 went to Canada. Last year about 77.000 Britishers entered the United States to settle, while during the twelve months ending 31st March last approximately 240,000 settlers' from the United Kingdom have entered Canada. Mr. Duncan Scott, Canada,'s Superintendent of Immigration, who was in England last month, said, in an interview" : "In the course of the coming fiscal year, which starts on, 31st March, we shall receive close on 500,000 settlers 'in the Dominion. And. judging from the class which has lately been going out from this side, they will consist, for the most part-, of just the sort ot people thai we want. There was aome^ criticism directed aga-inst the Immigration Department last yea-r to the. effect that we were refusing the landing in Canada of British people. How unjustifiable this was is evidenoed 'T>y the fact that, while "we rejected only 252 British emigrants — and in every case there waa a very good and sufficient reason for doing so — we turned back no less than 14.131 wouldbe settlers from the United States. Many of the rejected persons were either consumptives, epileptics, or feebleminded, and for such Canada has no use."]
