PRICE OF SUGAR.
GREYMOUTH'S INDIGNATION. [BY TELEGRAPH— PBESS- ASSOCIATION.] GREYMOUTH, This Day. Great indignation is expressed by the public and merchants in the town by the refusal of the Colonial Sugar Company to allow any bonus on direct purchases unless of £500 worth or over. This must prove detrimental to working men. who strongly condemn the tactics ■of the Sugar Company. The Greymouth Chamber of Commerce has takea the matter ,in hand, and it will be laid before Parliament. According to recent legislation it is illegal for any company to give bonuses. They were discontinued by the Sugar Company as soon as the Jiew Act came into force. The company now allows the following discounts: — On monthly purchases of the value of £500, 1 per cent. ; of £1000, 2 per cent. ; of £2500, 3 per cent. ; of £10,000, 4£ per cent. No restriction is placed upon purchasers as to where or from whom they shall buy their sugar.
