The births registered in tho four chief centres during March numbered 589— Auckland 172, Wellington 137, Christchurch 144, Dunedin 136. The deaths numbered 260— Auckland, 81, er 0.99 per 1000 ; Wellington, 67, or 0.86 per 1000 ; Christehurcli, 47, or 0.72 per 1000; Dunedin, 65, or 1.01 per 1000. Some of the causes of death wore : — Phthisis, 15 ; cancer, 33 ; apoplexy, 11 ; heart disease, 26 ; pneumonia, 11 ; enteritis (children under two years), 12 ; appendicitis, 3 ; Bright's disease, 7 ; senile decay, 10. Sixty -five of the deaths were of children under five years of age ; of these 47 were under one year of ag<s.
