CORONATION ILLUMINATIONS.

DISCUSSION AT THE HARBOUR BOARD. NO ACTION TAKEN. Brief reference to the subject of illuminations on the occasion of the King's Coronation was made at the meeting of the Harbour Board last night. The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended : — "That no action be taken with regard to the offer of Messrs. E. W. -Mills and Co., Ltd., to supply' fireworks to the board ; that no action be taken with regard to" the engineer's enquiry as to the board's intentions regarding Coronation illuminations." The Chairman briefly explained that the Engineer wished to have some guidance from the board on the subject. Mr. C. W. Jones : Does it mean that the board will not go in for illuminations on the occasion of the Coronation ? The Chairman : Yes. Mr. Jones : It might be thought rather disloyal if everybody else is doing something. The Chairman : The committee talked the matter over, and came to that conclusion. We are in a fortunate position, being close to the Government Buildings. The Post Office will be illuminated, and we won't want to go to any expense. Mr. Jones : We might see what other people are doing. If we are in the dark it might look rather singular. Personally, I think it would be a waste of money. I move that no action be taken in the matter at present. We can see then what other people are doing. The Chairman : In fairness, if anything is to be done, we ought to decide now. I have no hesitation in saying that if we do anything we should make a presentation to the hospital. I don't think we should spend money on illuminations. The report of the committee was j agreed to.
