The recent Libraries Conference ai Auckland passed without diecussion the following interesting motion.: — "That it is very desirable that power should be given to municipal corporations to levy increased rates for the purpose of maintaining public libraries, museums, lecture halk, and art galleries; and that the executive be asked to bring this matter under the notice of the Ministers who are at present visiting this city, with a. request to introduce the requisite- legislation at an early period of next session." Mercantile marine officers meet the representatives of the Union Steam Ship Company in conference on Monday next with reference to the demands for increase of wages, and working conditions of masters and mates, as formulated by the Merchant Service Guild. It is understood that the company has intimated without prejudice that it cannot accede to all the demands made by the captains and officers, but that it is perfectly willing to discuss the matters at issue. Accordingly, Captain D. J. Watson, secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, leaves Wellington for Dunedin to-mor-row, and Captain Evans, R.M.S. Aorangi, Captain D. Todd, s.s. Wanaka, and Mr. A. H.
