THE OLD TRAMSHED SITE.

10 THE BDITOE. Sir, — I saw a statement made tEe other 'day — I 'think by the Mayor — that it had . been decided by the City Council to sell the property formerly occupied by the old horse-tramway sheds by auction- I think ■that would be a great •, mistake. Considerable objection has been expressed against ■ -the Government selling any more of the naxionsil estate, and I think the same may be said against the City Council. Could ' it not be made reproductive and retained by the city if the City Council built some twenty or thirty four, five, and sixroomed workmen's cottages on it, and let them at small payable rentals to its own workrren? It would not only be an advantage to the city, but to the men who ' have now to reside in the far suburbs to enable them to live on the wages given. I hopu to see something more said on this matter before it goes too far, otherwise the land will be picked up by some syndicate of moneyed men and its advantages lost. The Auckland Council, I believe, proposes or is erecting such cottages. We hear a lot of talk of assisting the workers, and yet when a chance offers, it is not taken advantage of. — I am, etc., WOEKER. 16th April.
