Afi it happens thai the opening of the Avondale Jockey tjlub's autumn meeting falls on the same day a£ the municipal elections, Wednesday, 26th April, th<» members of tho Auckland Citizens' League., realising that there should be no conflict between the enjoyment of 6port and the performance of civic dntiea, have interested themselves with a view to bringing about a settlement of this difficulty. A deputation of the league, headed *by Mr. W. J. Ralph (president), waited on tho chairman and committee of the Avondale Jockey Club with the request that the meeting should be postponed. In stating the objects of the deputation, Mr. Ralph said that- although the Citizens' League fully realised that, the postponement of the meeting at such short notice would occasion considerable inconvenience to the club, they felt the importance of a civic duty was paramount to the enjoyment oi the relaxation provided to a large sectidn of our community in the popular form of racing. He emphasised that all fiportemen should awake to a full sense of their civic responsibilities, and suggested that it would be only through the realisation of this fact that they would in the future be enabled to enjoy any form of sport. He further submitted that as the ordinary sportema-n in common with many others might have a tendency to t>e somewhat apathetic in the exercise' of his civic duty, thei postponement of an important race meeting would effectually bring home to him a recognition of his obligations as a citizen. The representations of the deputation were very lnvourably received by the committee of the club, which, as a- result, placed itself in communication with the Minister for Internal Aff ail's (Hon. D. Buddo) and the president of tho Racing Conference (Sir Geo. Clifford), with a view of bringing about the request of tho Citizens' League.
