NO-LICENSE MOVEMENT.

The Otaki No-license League held a picnic convention on the Waikanae racecourse yesterday. There was a large attendance, and Mr. W. H. Herd, c-f Levin, president of the league, presided. Mr. A. Snowball, secretary of the Masterton V.M.C.A., declared that Masterton was very much better off than many towns in licensing districts. At the end of the first year of no-license the business men by a large majority agreed that the effect had been good, declared that business had not suffered, and stated that the influence upon public order and the moral tone had been beneficial. Quite recently prominent business men and others had assured him that trade in Masterton was better now than ever" before. Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., said that during a recent visit to Nelson he had found that the hop-growers there were convinced that the days of the liquor traffic were coming to an end, and so they were laying down their land in orchards by Way of preparing for a new occupation.
