Franklin, a miner employed at the Grand Junction mme 1 , was seriously injured through the premature explosion of a charge of gelignite fracturing his left arm, and necessitating amputation. A miner named Faulder, employed in the Waihi mine, had a narrow escape. After firing the fuse of a charged hole he was knocked down by a piece of quartz falling from the roof overhead. However, he managed to crawl behind a pile of dirt, thus escaping the full effect of the flying stone which followed the explosion.
