ENORMOUS POSSIBILITIES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I read with interesLjVlr. F, J. Pinney's remarks, about the possibilities of the Tauranga district, in your issue of to-night. His remarks would apply to innumerable districts throughout the Dominion. We have here some of the best bush land in the world, but what it the good of it if we cannot get it. I know dozens of young men of the •best stamp, between 25 and 35_years of age, each with about £100 cash behind them, who want land, but they arecon'demned to the "land ballot," which is a slow and uncertain process; years of ■waiting, and then perhaps in vain. Other than Crown land we cannot look at, because it is in the hands, mostly, of speculators, who charge a big goodwill per acre for virgin bush. I think no landowner is entitled to a goodwill on virgin bush ; he should be -jnade to improve it, or be heavily taxed, because there are hundreds of others waiting to get land to improve, in a manner, good for themselves and the conntry. Yes, Mr. Pinny is right; there are enormous possibilities for us young men on the land (when we get there), but our chances are very remote without a small /fortune or a more rapid policy by, the Government of opening up Crown lands. — I am, etc., .WAITING. .Wellington, 17th April, 1911.
