KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Karori Borough Council was held last evening. There were present — The Mayor (Mr. C. I. Dasent), Councillors Burn, Cathie, Hildreth, Spiers, Standen, Walmsley, and Welling. INSURANCE. The manager of the Standard Insurance Company wrote, stating that, as the company was desirous of securing some of the business of the local bodies, it would be pleased if the accident insurance of the council were given to it. The council decided to ,take no action at present in the matter of accident insurance. LAMP WANTED. Mr. A. Moore, on behalf of residents of Joll-street, asked that a lamp be placed on the upper part of r that street. The letter pointed out that there were now five houses in the street, and the one lamp on the zig-zag was not sufficient. " ' ' The matter was referred to the Lighting Committee. FOOTBALLERS' REQUESTS. The Kai'ori Football Club wrote asking- for the' use of a room on the Karori Recreation. Ground for training purposes, and the request was granted. The club also asked for the use of the ground, but as the Rugby Union has been given control of the grounds for the season the club will be referred to that body. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. G. W. Brigham) reported that work on the tramway extension was progressing satisfactorily. The last rails had been laid, and the only work now to be done was the fastening up of the rails, tarring work, making up or formation of the road, and trimming of the footpaths. The line would be ready for inspection in about a fortnight. OVERDUE RATES. Councillor Standen, according to notice given at last meeting, moved to the effect that the Town Clerk should give three days'. notice_in writing before imposing a penalty of 10 per cent, on all outstanding rates. The Mayor was of opinion that it would be much more satisfactory if ratepayers were to receive such notice than to be summoned. Councillor Cathie did not think the position would be improved by the proposed procedure. ' Councillor Burn considered ratepayers had ample time in which to pay their rates. If, he said, the rates were not paid by a certain time the council would have to obtain an overdraft at the bank, and pay interest on it. This would not be fair to prompt payers of rates. Several councillors were of opinion that if the motion were passed the usual procedure of the imposition of 10 per cent, penalty would be affected. Councillor Standen did not agree with this opinion, and, referring to the question of an overdraft, said that was, after -all, a secondary consideration. It would, he urged, be an act of courtesy to the ratepayers to forward them a notice, and thus give them three days' grace. The motion, after a little further discussion, was lost. The council adjourned.
